Took the national team to the World Cup after 36 years, then missed because of cocaine

The best player in the history of Peruvian football, Paolo Guerrero, has announced that he has finished his career in the national team.

The former goalscorer of numerous German teams, including Bayern Munich, put an end to playing for the national team after twenty years.

– The national team needs new players, new people, new faces. People are looking for them, so let’s give them a chance – said Guerrero, who made his debut for Peru on October 9, 2004.

He played his last match for the national team on November 19 last year in the qualifiers for the World Cup against Argentina. He retires after 125 games for the national team and 40 goals.

He scored the last goal for Peru in March 2023 in a friendly match against the Dominican Republic, in a 4:1 victory.

In his career, he played for Bayern, HSV, Cotintians, and is currently a member of Alianza from Lima. He played at six Copa Americas and once at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Guerrero scored five goals in the South American qualifiers and contributed greatly to Peru’s qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Peru thus qualified for the World Cup after 36 years, and the “hero” of the national team failed to help the team in the tournament due to cocaine consumption.
