The company’s external GPU (eGPU) appeared at CES 2025 Asus. It’s called ROG XG Mobile and it is an upgrade of an already existing version. But this improvement goes far beyond just replacing the graphics chip. The dimensions, equipment and even cooling have changed. Let’s start with the essentials. The novelty is the graphics chips hidden inside, and two versions will be available, one with a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop, the other with a GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop. We find the fast Thunderbolt 5 interface (bidirectional 80 Gbps) with 140W Power Delivery, we also have DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, power jack, RJ-45 for network communication (up to 5 Gbps!), and two USB-A ports 3.2 Gen 2 and one SD card reader including support for UHS-II.
The box measures 20.8×15.5×2.96 cm (18.2% smaller than its predecessor) and weighs 952 grams. Power is provided by a 330W adapter. Cooling is then handled by a new system with a cooling surface increased by 54%, there is an evaporator chamber and the cooler is now 3 dB(A) quieter. We do not yet know what practical performance this solution will have compared to a graphics card directly in the laptop. Anyway, the variant with RTX 5090 Laptop should cost 2200 USD, the version with RTX 5070 Ti Laptop then 1200 USD. So it is not exactly a cheap device.
