The first vice president of the Government, Minister of Finance and deputy general secretary of the PSOE, Maria Jesus Monterobegins this Wednesday the path to lead the socialist party in Andalusiain whose regional executive – which she joined as an independent – she already served as an advisor under several presidents. He did so at an event with militants from Seville, one day after the still general secretary, Juan Espadasannounced that he would not run for re-election so that the PSOE has “a stimulus” and so that there is a “winning” candidacy in the next Andalusian elections.
“This is Andalusia for me, the place to I’m not coming back because I never left“said Montero before a packed room in a Seville hotelwhere the event had to be moved due to the high attendance of militants. “I always worked for Andalusia and I continue working for and for this land,” added Montero, thus receiving a standing ovation from those in attendance.
Recognition of Juan Espadas and self-criticism of the PP
The first vice president dedicated part of her speech, however, to recognize the work of Juan Espadasthe current general secretary of the PSOE-A, who announced on Tuesday that he would not seek re-election. “Politics is a relay race. I want to publicly acknowledge the immense work by Juan Espadaswho has shown commitment and dedication,” he said.
With his characteristic direct tone, Montero launched harsh criticism of the management of Juanma Moreno’s Government in Andalusiaaccusing the PP of lack of ambition to face the community’s challenges. “Andalusia hurts me because of the situation to which the PP has brought it, with a collapsed public health system and an education that excludes young people who cannot afford Moreno Bonilla’s elitist model.”
Montero also highlighted the need for a “strong, united and ambitious” Andalusian PSOE. In his words, this is the time to “recover party self-esteem” and reconnect with the Andalusians. “We are a party that has always fought for equality and progress, and that is the essence that we must recover,” he stressed.

Montero’s speech was also impregnated with hope and confidence in the future of the PSOE-A. “We are determined to win the next regional elections“, proclaimed the deputy secretary general of the PSOE, appealing to the commitment of the militants and sympathizers. In addition, she invited all the progressive citizens of Andalusia to join the process, remembering that “we are at the service of the people.”
Right hand of Pedro Sánchez on numerous issues and even ‘left hand’ inside and outside the party due to his negotiation skills, Montero has been one of the most important pillars of the coalition governmentwith a marked and energetic political profile, very critical of the opposition, and visible head of the central Executive, for which he has also been spokesperson.
