Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) writes on Instagram and Facebook that on Wednesday she met with the chairman of Greenland’s national government, Múte B. Egede, just as she has been in telephone contact with a number of European leaders during the day.
This happens after several announcements from Donald Trump about Greenland.
– That is not all we can say in public, but you can be sure that we, on the part of the government, do everything we can to look after Denmark’s – and the Commonwealth’s – interests, she writes, among other things.
The incoming US president, Donald Trump, said at a press conference on Tuesday that he could not rule out the use of economic or military coercion to gain control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.
He also said that he is considering imposing a special tariff on Danish goods if Denmark does not agree to sell Greenland to the United States.
Already on Tuesday, Mette Frederiksen said that she thought “we must stick to dealing with each other and do it in a proper way”.
She repeats that in her post on Wednesday.
Furthermore, she emphasizes again that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.
– Then there is the question of Greenlandic independence. I understand that this is a widespread wish in Greenland. And would therefore like to repeat that it is a decision that starts and ends in Nuuk.
– Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders, and as Múte B. Egede has said, it is the Greenlanders themselves who must define their future. At no time will Denmark oppose that process, she writes on Instagram on Wednesday.
Several European leaders have commented on Trump’s statements on Wednesday.
Among others, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron.
Mette Frederiksen describes Wednesday as a “busy” day on Instagram and Facebook. Thursday will probably be the same.
Among other things, party leaders of the parties in the Danish Parliament have been summoned to a meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday.
The topic is the situation regarding Greenland and the USA, TV 2 and several other media learned on Tuesday evening. According to TV 2, the meeting will begin at 19.30.
