The crisis continues for GameStop which is struggling to recover. Since 2020, these are more than 1000 stores that have been closed. Unfortunately, to start this year 2025, we learn that new brands went out of business in December. Worse yet, GameStop opts for silent shutdowns in the greatest indifference.
GameStop closes new stores, without saying anything
It is once again through social networks, with posts on Reddit and on X, that we learned directly from employees that GameStop has chosen to close 300 new stores in North America during of the month of December 2024without officially communicating it.
It was mainly on Reddit where many messages appeared from employees who had just lost their jobs. Worse still, a report from PSLS confirms that employees were offered severance packages and transfers to other GameStop stores. On the other hand, not everyone had the right. Obviously, the compensation was not reserved only to full-time employees like managers. For part-time employees, the only solution was, hopefully, a transfer to other stores or outright loss of employment.
Since 2020, GameStop has closed more than 1000 stores and eliminated thousands of positions. Recently, the media Game Informer was the victim of budgetary restrictions. Remember that in 2024, GameStop achieved an annual profit of 6.7 million dollars during the 2023 financial year which ended on February 3, 2024. A feat which had not been achieved since the 2017 fiscal year.
However, the future of the group remains uncertain and other closures and layoffs cannot be ruled out in the coming weeks and months. Since video game distribution is GameStop’s main source of revenue, it is not certain that the company’s future is very bright. A few hours ago, we learned of a -35% drop in sales of physical video games in Europe.
