The speed is reduced on an important road in Budapest

Speed limits continue to be reduced in Budapest, this time it’s the Lower Wharf of Buda. From January 10, instead of alternating between 70 and 50 km/h road sections, the maximum permitted speed will be uniformly 50 on the almost 8 kilometer long road section between Tímár utca and Rákóczi bridge. An exception to this is the area around the designated pedestrian crossing and cycle path crossing on Nagyszombat Street, where the lower speed limit of 40 km/h remains.

The revision and modification of the speed limit was justified, among other things, by the fact that between 2019 and 2023, a total of 51 road traffic incidents involving personal injuries occurred on the affected road section. Of these, one resulted in death, 15 serious and 35 minor injuries. There is also increased pedestrian traffic at tourist destinations, such as the Angelo Rotta quay and in the vicinity of the A38 Hajó.

On the lower quay in Buda, the speed of 70 km/h could only be reached in practice at night or in the early hours of the morning (when visibility is typically worse), as congestion is also common on longer sections during the day. In addition to improving traffic safety, the lower speed at night and dawn also reduces noise pollution.

A Budapest Transport Center already in 2024, it reduced the maximum permitted speed in several locations, the last time a similar measure was taken in December.
