The Galaxy S26 Ultra could inherit Samsung’s foldable display technology

The series Galaxy S25 it hasn’t launched yet and we’re already starting to hear more rumors about the series Galaxy S26. A new report suggests that Samsung is considering a display refresh for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, possibly making it more subtlebrighter and more efficient.

A report from Korean magazine The Elec claims that Samsung is planning to apply the technology Color-filter-on-thin-film-encapsulation (CoE) to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which will launch in 2026. CoE is a technology that replaces the polarizing plates in OLEDs with a color filter and changes the overall Pixel Define Layer (PDL) to a black one.

The polarizing layer in a OLED it eliminates reflections and improves visibility, but also adds a bit of thickness. Worse, it blocks some of the light emitted, reducing perceived brightness or forcing you to use more power to achieve the same brightness level (which in turn also affects the lifespan of the product). So display manufacturers have struggled to find a way to remove the polarizer while still maintaining its benefits.

When the polarizing layer is removed, the display panel becomes thinner and its light transmittance increases, which can help reduce power consumption. Since a color filter is used instead, the color reproduction is improved. With CoE on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, Samsung could be trying to make the phone thinner without compromising the display.
