Neil Young has announced the release of a so far unreleased album Oceanside Countrysiderecorded between May and December 1977.
The album, which will be released on February 14, is part of Young’s series Analog Originals. The ten tracks share themes with the album it replaced Oceanside Countryside in 1978, Comes a Time. Three songs – “Goin’ Back,” “Human Highway” and “Field of Opportunity” – appeared on his ninth album when it was released in October of that year.
“This analog original album was recorded in 1977 but never released,” Young said in a statement accompanying the release.
“These songs are original mixes done during recording and are arranged as I planned for the album. I sang vocals and played instruments in Oceanside, Florida at Triad Studios and Malibu at Indigo Studios. On Countryside I sang vocals and recorded with my great musician friends, Ben Keith, Joe Osborne, Karl T. Himmel and Rufus Thibodeaux at Crazy Mama’s in Nashville.
“I hope you enjoy this treasure trove of original analog footage, recorded by Tim Mulligan, as much as I do. Listening to it now, I think I should have released it then.”
The first side of the album features Young’s solo performances; The other side features support from steel guitarist Ben Keith, violinist Rufus Thibodeaux, drummers Karl T. Himml and Levon Helm, as well as bassists Joe Osborne and Tim Drummond.
Although these songs have appeared on other Young albums over the years, and songs from Oceanside Countryside are issued as part of the edition Archives Vol. III (1976-1987) 2024, the upcoming release marks the debut of several previously unreleased versions and for the first time the track order reflects the original album structure.
