Business and threatening letters. The fate of two Estonian eel farms hangs in the balance

“What am I to blame for?” asks Tiit Soosaar, one of two owners of Estonian eel farms. In recent years, he has repeatedly found threatening letters in his mailbox. They promise to cause a power outage on his farm, break the generator, or do something else malicious.

Eel farming is a completely legal but also emotionally stressful business. The European eel is listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Scientists estimate that over the past decades, eel numbers have declined by 90-97%, depending on the region. If the eel population declines even further, this will lead to the extinction of the species.
