Mexico announced the production of electric cars from only 4,400 dollars

The government of Mexico has decided to start the production of its own electric cars, the price of which will vary from 4,400 to 7,400 dollars, depending on the model. Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo, the president of Mexico, presented Olinia, the first manufacturer of mini electric vehicles developed in Mexico, at a recent government conference.

According to her, these small cars will provide a safe, efficient and sustainable solution for urban mobility.

As she stated, the plan is to produce three types of electric mini vehicles – one model is intended for personal mobility needs, for example, young people who take their children to school or those who would normally ride motorcycles. The second model comes as an alternative to motorcycle taxis, providing a safe, quiet and comfortable alternative for users, and low operating costs for drivers. Finally, the third model is intended for the distribution of goods over short distances as a sustainable response to the growing demand for delivery in online commerce and the increasingly common delivery of groceries.

The President of Mexico explained that these models, in addition to being affordable, will be able to be charged at any outlet, which will further facilitate their daily use. The goal is to build regional assembly plants in different states of Mexico, as well as for most of the components of these electric cars to be of Mexican origin.

“The idea is for the Government to support the Secretariat (Secretariat for Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation) to create this design and, when it comes to assembling the vehicle, the parts can be made and assembled in different places, which is one of the goals. Since traveling by car from Sonora to the Yucatan comes at a price, it also increases the cost of the vehicle. “If we can have an assembly company in the Yucatan and one in Sonora, that would be very good because it allows us to sell vehicles at a lower price,” said Sheinbaum Pardo.

The project will be coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, and will be developed by the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM). The investment in the project in 2025 will amount to about 1,200,000 dollars.

“For now, we have a working team; They have already advanced. Even private companies that have been dedicated to the production of electric motors in Mexico for a long time will be invited,” added the President of Mexico.

A turning point in the Mexican industry

Rosaura Ruiz GutiƩrrez, Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, said Olinia, which means movement in the Aztec language, marks a turning point in Mexican industry and highlights collaboration between academia, government and the manufacturing sector in the pursuit of technological sovereignty and prosperity. Mexico.

“Through Olinia, we strive to achieve a successful transfer of technology from the academic and research sector for the establishment of companies, in this case a public-private partnership. This is one of the ways in which the model of shared prosperity will be reflected, because part of the generated income will be allocated for science and education,” said Ruis GutiĆ©rrez.

Roberto Capuano Tripp, Olinia project coordinator, explained that all three models will use a multipurpose modular platform, which means that the chassis, engine, drive and battery will be developed only once, and different bodies will be added to that platform to provide them with different uses.

He specified that the vehicles will be zero-emission, that is, they will not emit greenhouse gases, they will not make noise, and they will have much lower operating costs than gasoline-powered vehicles. It is planned that the vehicles will be equipped with lithium-ion batteries.
