Norway’s government will build shelters and increase grain stocks

More shelters and larger grain stores must help to secure the Norwegians in the event of war.

On Friday, Norway’s government presented a contingency plan with more than 100 measures to ensure that the population is able to withstand crises.

According to NTB, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre states that the preparedness in Norway needs to be updated.

– We must do more. We need a change of gear, says Jonas Gahr Støre at a press conference.

The government wants to lift a construction freeze on shelters introduced in 1998 and instead introduce an obligation to build new ones.

The number of conscripts in the civil defense must be increased from 8,000 to 12,000 over the next eight years.

Another proposal is that before 2029, grain stocks will be built that can last for three months.

A total preparedness commission has come up with a long list of recommendations.

The contingency plan will be presented to the Storting.
