Apple will soon show another football documentary. This time, it is not Messi who plays the main role, but the entire MLS league.
Since Apple took over the rights to broadcast MLS matches, the American soccer league – previously downplayed and ridiculed – has gained in popularity and attracted new fans, thanks to which over 11 million viewers visited Major Soccer League stadiums last year. Apple plans to continue investing in the popularization of MLS, and another expression of this tactic is the documentary series Onside: Major League Soccer, which will soon appear on TV+.
Apple will show the breakthrough MLS season from behind the scenes
Was the MLS mockery justified in any way? Years ago, maybe so – it was there that the stars of European football landed, who were no longer fit to play at the highest level, which is why for decades MLS was called the league of retirees. Today, however, the situation has changed a bit. Although MLS is still far from giants such as the Premier League or La Liga, both the level of the competition and the approach to organization have significantly improved. Onside: Major League Soccer – Apple’s new documentary series – is intended to be a way to show this difficult path: from a laughing stock to the league that hosts the legendary Messi.
With unprecedented access to players, coaches and clubs, ‘Onside: Major League Soccer’ explores the electrifying moments and compelling stories that make the 2024 season unforgettable, while also looking beyond the pitch with the personalities that make MLS tick. MLS announcement
Despite the references to the past, the eight-episode documentary series will focus mainly on the groundbreaking 2023/24 season. It was then that Leo Messi joined Inter Miami and it was then that clubs in MLS recorded a 13% increase in sponsorship revenues, gaining a total of 18 new business partners. We can expect not only moving stories from the locker room, but also reports from the players’ families. Onside: Major League Soccer premieres on Apple TV+ on February 21.
