iPhone 17 Pro, three 48MP cameras expected and other new features

With a launch scheduled for September 2025, the line iPhone 17 Pro continues to be talked about thanks to numerous rumors revealing details about the cameras and design. According to the latest leaked information,

Apple seems intent on revolutionizing the entire photographic system, introducing some interesting innovations but also some possible compromises.

Three 48 Megapixel cameras

One of the most important innovations concerns the introduction of a photographic system composed entirely of three 48MP lenses. Both Pro models, according to the well-known Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, will feature:

  • Main lens with 48MP, 1/1.3″ Fusion Sensor, with hybrid glass-plastic technology.
  • Ultra-Wide da 48MP.
  • 48MP Tetraprism telephoto lenswhich marks a clear improvement over the 12MP model present on the iPhone 16 Pro.

As for the front camerathe entire iPhone 17 line will switch to a sensor from 24MPa significant upgrade compared to the 12MP of the current iPhone 16. Apple thus aims to improve both image quality and performance in low light conditions.

A slightly smaller main sensor

Despite the upgrade in camera resolution, it appears that Apple is adopting a primary sensor slightly smaller compared to the one used on the iPhone 16 Pro. In fact, we are talking about a 1/1.3″ sensor versus the current 1/1.28″. The difference is minimal and difficult to perceive in daily use, but this choice could be linked to changes in the design of the camera module.

The iPhone 17 Pro line will introduce a completely redesigned camera module, featuring a aluminum bump instead of glass. This modification is not only aesthetic but also serves to improve durability and integrate a more fluid and harmonious design with the rear body, which will be partly in aluminum and partly in glass.

Chinese leakers indicate that the new module will have an elongated oval shape, different from the classic rectangle seen so far. This change may require more compact sensors, such as switching to 1/1.3″ for the main camera.

Despite the aesthetic and functional advantages, the adoption of a smaller sensor could be seen as a disadvantage compromise to adapt to the new design. However, Apple is known for balancing sensor sizes with software improvements, such as image processing with the A19 chip, to ensure excellent photo quality.

The iPhone 17 range, in addition to the Pro models, will introduce a significant change to the lineup. The iPhone 17 Plus will be replaced by a thinner and lighter model, tentatively dubbed iPhone 17 Air. This model will represent a fusion of premium design and advanced features, positioning itself between the basic iPhone and the Pro models.
