How big was the involvement of the EU in the CCR decision?

Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton brings up the precedent in Romania and evokes the possibility of canceling the election results, in much the same way, in Germany as well, he says French press.

Elon Musk’s meddling in the upcoming election could lead to the results being overturned, Breton said, as many EU leaders expressed concern about Musk’s support for the AfD.

Thierry Breton wanted to specify that “freedom of expression is a fundamental element in Europe”, but also that Musk must respect the law.

“Musk must comply with European rules. With the AfD, you have to watch. It goes without saying that we will take every step to ensure that they comply with the law. If they don’t comply, there are fines and the possibility of a ban,” Breton said.

“Enforce our laws in Europe when they risk being circumvented and when they can, if not enforced, lead to interference. We did it in Romania and, obviously, we will have to do it, if necessary, in Germany,” said Breton.

Several MEPs have criticized the European Commission’s implementation of the Digital Services Acts (DSA), the major European regulation aimed at regulating companies that own social networks, arguing that it has been slow.

“Either the European Commission enforces as firmly as possible the laws that exist to protect our single space, or it does not, and in that case it should consider returning the ability to do so to the Member States of the European Union, to example of France”, said the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot.

The DSA came into force in 2022 and imposes obligations to remove content deemed illegal.
