We test the new Asus Prime B840M-A WiFi motherboard built on the affordable B840 chipset. Surprisingly, it has many connectors.
The AM5 socket will be with us for a few more years, and the latest Ryzen 9000s were only available with chipsets from the older B600 series or the less affordable X870 and X870E chipsets. That fact is changing with the ongoing CES in Las Vegas. And AMD presents us here with other cheaper AMD B850 and B840 chipsets, which is also the case with the tested Asus Prime B840M-A WiFi.
The AMD B840 chipset is closer to the A620 chipset than any other “B” chipset in my opinion. Like the AMD A620 chipset, it only offers overclocking of operational memories (EXPO) and no longer offers overclocking of processors. The AMD B840 has the same number of native USB and SATA ports as the AMD A620 chipset. The B840 chipset has increased the number of PCIe lanes from 32 to 34 compared to the AMD A620, but it still does not reach the amount of PCIe lanes on the B650 chipset. The whole thing seems to me personally like a marketing game by AMD, trying to force customers that the B840 chipset is not a competitor of Intel’s H810 chipset, but the B860.
Basic information
I received a board from the Prime series for review, which is the cheapest board series from Asus. Asus also offers the TUF, ProArt, ROG Strix and ROG series, exceptionally we can also meet other special series such as AYW, which unfortunately are not normally available in our country.
The Asus Prime B840M-A WIFI is mATX format, has a black six-layer PCB with white labels printed on it. The motherboard has three heatsinks on it, all of them are made of aluminum and have a natural aluminum color. The largest cooler cools the power supply cascade next to the processor, another cooler is ready for cooling the M.2 disk, and the last cooler can be found on the chipset.
