There are many indications that the Cleveland Browns cannot make use of their highly paid quarterback Deshaun Watson when the next season begins in September. The NFL team from Ohio writes in a press release that Watson has again been diagnosed with a torn right Achilles tendon. He tore the same Achilles tendon on October 20 in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and the rehabilitation has now been severely delayed.
“Earlier this week, Watson stopped by the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus to undergo a physical as part of the Browns’ offseason. He complained of discomfort after twisting his ankle in Miami. An MRI scan showed that the Achilles tendon has been torn again. It is unknown how long Watson will be in recovery and when he can return. He will probably miss a significant portion of the 2025 season,” the Cleveland Browns wrote in the announcement shared on X.
The questions are now in a queue for the NFL team, which in 2022 signed a five-year contract with Watson worth 230 million dollars, equivalent to just under 1.7 billion kroner at the current exchange rate. It fell on many people’s chests because Watson was simultaneously accused of sexual assaults and violations of more than 20 women. 23 out of 24 cases then ended in settlement, and he has never been convicted in the legal system.
However, before Watson returned to the NFL in 2022, he had to pay a fine of five million dollars and undergo a treatment program recommended by behavioral experts. He was also banned for 11 matches.
Leading up to the current season, the quarterback was again accused of an assault that was allegedly committed in 2020. That case also ended in a settlement.
Despite all the negative attention off the field, the Cleveland Browns chose to send several valuable draft picks to the Houston Texans to acquire the American. The hope was that with his performances on the field, he could lead the team to much-needed success, but the story has been different, to say the least.
Watson has statistically been among the worst quarterbacks in the NFL in recent seasons, and the question now is where and when he can get his career back on track. His contract runs until the end of the 2026 season.
