60% of the dairy products we consume in Romania are imported

More than 30% of the average daily net consumption per inhabitant in Romania is occupied by milk and milk products, the largest share in food.

Romania is among the biggest consumers of milk in Europe, per capita, surpassing countries like Germany, Austria, Poland or Spain. On the one hand, the tradition of milk consumption is part of our culture, based on raising animals for milk in rural life, whether it is cows, whether it is sheep or goats.

On the other hand, milk remains a cheap product, sold at some of the lowest prices in the EU, and the high consumption of milk does not necessarily show Romania’s prosperity, but rather a more difficult economic situation, experts in the field believe. Compared to Western countries, which have a higher consumption of cheese and dairy products and a well-developed industry, Romania had a decline in animal husbandry and a slower development of industry, and now, even the finished products they consume, in most of them are imported from these countries.

“About 60% of all the dairy products we consume in Romania comes from imports, in different forms: raw milk, milk powder, semi-finished products and finished products. The first and most important step is the prioritization of animal husbandry to provide raw material to factories in Romania. We still have capacity in these factories, but it is gradually reducing because the raw material is in other countries. We need to increase the production of existing farms and add new farms”, says Adrian Cocan, co-founder and general director of the Lăptăria cu Caimac brand, produced by Agroserv Măriuţa (stock symbol Milk).
