A first in history: Interpol’s Silver Notice on the origin of criminal assets
On January 10th, Interpol issued its first silver notice, the aim of which is to search for property obtained through criminal acts, fight against organized cross-border crime and strengthen international police cooperation.
A silver notice, the first in the history of Interpol, was requested by Italy in order to investigate the origin of the property of a senior member of the mafia, the international police organization announced.
The Silver Notice is the latest addition to the range of arrest, search or notification warrants issued by Interpol in different colours, and is intended to enable member states around the world to share alerts and information, and has been launched as a pilot project, initially in 52 countries and territories.
The notice allows states to request information about assets that may be linked to criminal activities, such as fraud, corruption, drug trafficking, environmental crimes and other serious crimes. Interpol member states can then use that information as a basis for bilateral cooperation, including bilateral requests to freeze, or seize assets that are otherwise subject to national laws.
“Depriving criminals of their networks and illegal profits is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against transnational crime, especially when you consider that 99% of criminal assets go undetected. By targeting their financial gains, Interpol works to cut down criminal networks and reduce their malign influence on communities around the world,” said Interpol’s Secretary General, Brazilian Valdesà Urquiza.
From the Interpol announcement, it can be seen that Serbia is not a participant in the pilot phase of the silver notification.
Until now, Interpol has orders and notices in several colors in its international exchange system. They are a red warrant, yellow for the search for missing persons, blue for additional information, black for body identification, green for notifications and intelligence, orange for warning of imminent danger and purple for someone’s behavior and actions.
