Limescale is a white chalky deposit that forms in appliances, including kettles. It appears due to hard water. Scale is made up of minerals dissolved in water. According to the experts at UK Cleaning Supplies, there are several methods for cleaning kettles. These include using natural remedies such as vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda or citric acid.
White vinegar
To descale, simply fill the kettle halfway with water and white vinegar in equal proportions (1:1). Heat the solution to a boil and leave it in the kettle for 15–20 minutes.
When the kettle has cooled, pour out the solution and rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any residue. After cleaning the inside of the kettle, fill it with clean water and boil it once or twice to get rid of the lingering vinegar smell.
Lemon juice and baking soda

First, pour water into the kettle. Then measure out one or two tablespoons of citric acid, add it to the kettle and stir gently.
Bring the water in the kettle to a boil and leave the solution for 15–20 minutes. When the kettle has cooled, use a soft brush to gently brush the inside of the kettle, and then rinse thoroughly several times.
