The vessel flying the flag of Panama encountered technical problems in the Baltic Sea. It appears that an outage in the electrical system caused technical problems with the ship’s engine. The ship drifted and arrived about 14 km from a tourist island.

Three German tugboats were dispatched to the scene and managed to establish contact with the vessel during the night of Friday into Saturday. The tugboats are trying to take the tanker as far as possible from the coast to the northeast, according to a statement published by the German naval authority, quoted by Le Figaro.

The vessel carrying 99,000 tonnes of oil is suspected to be part of Russia’s “ghost fleet”.

Moreover, the German foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, accused Russia of “endangering” European security “not only with its war of aggression against Ukraine (…), but also with dilapidated oil tankers”.

Greenpeace announced that the oil tanker heading to Port Said in Egypt is on the list of ships with “technical problems”. The ship is also included in the list of 192 “most dangerous oil tankers” in the world.
