On which side of the road can you leave the car?

A number of different rules apply on one-way roads compared to roads where traffic is allowed in both directions. For example, can you park your car on the left side of the road or are you obliged to leave it on the right?

There are several prohibited maneuvers on a one-way road, according to the updated Highway Code.

And drivers who do not take into account these rules risk stinging fines.

Prohibited maneuvers on one-way streets

The Highway Code prohibits turning on one-way streets.

You are also not allowed to back out of a one-way street into another main or secondary road.

When exiting a one-way street, drivers turning left must drive in the left lane. Or, if the road has only one lane, it must drive as close to the left curb as possible.

Can you reverse on a one-way street?

By law, drivers have the right to drive backwards on a one-way street. But they are not allowed to perform this maneuver over a distance of more than 50 meters.

And this rule applies on all types of road, regardless of the number of lanes.

Reversing the vehicle is prohibited:

  • in all situations where turning, overtaking and stopping maneuvers are prohibited, except for the one-way;
  • when there is insufficient visibility;
  • over a distance of more than 50 m;
  • at the exit from properties adjacent to public roads.

Failure to comply with the rules regarding the turning maneuver, going backwards, changing the traffic lane or the direction of travel is a misdemeanor, punishable with the fine provided in the first class of sanctions (2-3 fine points).

If an accident occurred due to this maneuver, it is sanctioned with the fine provided in the second class of sanctions (4-5 fine points).

Parking on a one-way street: On which side of the road can you leave your car?

In general, on one-way streets, parking is done on both sides, but only if there is enough space for other vehicles.

On one-way roads, voluntary stopping or parking of vehicles is also allowed on the left side, if at least one traffic lane remains free”, it is specified in Art. 173 (2) of the traffic law.

But, there may be areas where stopping is only allowed on one side. Therefore, drivers must pay attention to road signs and markings.
