This is the second person to die in the emergency room of an Ile-de-France hospital in a few days. A 26-year-old young woman died on Friday at the Villeneuve-Saint-Georges hospital (Val-de-Marne) and an investigation was opened to determine the circumstances of the tragedy, the public prosecutor’s office announced this Saturday, January 11 in the evening. Creteil.
Entering the emergency room during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the victim was supposed to leave the hospital Thursday evening, but remained sleeping in the waiting room, detailed the prosecution. She would have been discovered “casting” by his parents the next day, Friday around 1 p.m., according to information from Parisian. At 3 p.m., the death was declared by a judicial police officer.
Why was the young woman not taken care of? Who is responsible, if, as Le Parisien asserts, it was declared on Thursday as “leaving the establishment” ? Did caregivers see him but were they too overwhelmed to inquire about his condition? Many questions remain at this time about the circumstances of this tragedy.
Investigations to clarify the circumstances of his death were entrusted to the Brigade for the Repression of Personal Delinquency (BRDP) of the Paris judicial police. An autopsy is planned in the coming days, the prosecution said.
Disastrous working conditions
“The Villeneuve-Saint-Georges Intercommunal Hospital Center (CHIV) confirms having reported to the police the unexplained death of a woman present in the premises of the adult emergency reception department of the hospital”, for its part declared the management of the establishment in a press release, without making further comments. According to the local newspaper, it was the health establishment which requested the opening of the investigation.
In this same hospital in the Paris region, at the beginning of January, caregivers went on strike to demand more staff and denounce their disastrous working conditions. An agreement to end the strike was signed on Tuesday January 7 with the CGT, according to management. This agreement provides for additional staff “over the period from October 1 to March 31, particularly impacted by winter epidemics and a significant increase in emergency room visits”, specifies this same source. According to the Parisianmore than ten new positions would be planned.
Late Wednesday afternoon, at the Longjumeau hospital center (Essonne), a 20-year-old patient suffering from a genetic disease died in the emergency room late Wednesday afternoon after spending hours on a stretcher. There too an investigation was opened.
These deaths occur while dozens of hospitals have activated the “white plan” in the face of the flu epidemic, a system which makes it possible to deprogram certain operations or to recall staff from leave. The winter flu epidemic intensified at the beginning of January and caused hospitalizations at a level “exceptionally high” compared to previous seasons.
