Google significantly improves RCS security, communication will be secure even with iPhone

Today’s era puts a lot of emphasis on privacy, which is why end-to-end encryption of messages is commonplace today. This means that data se they encode in the sender’s device and decode again only at the recipient’s. No one, not even the service provider cannot read the content of the message. But this is not the case if you are sending RCS messages between Android and iPhone. But Google is already working on a fix.

RCS security

The whole thing came about because RCS uses encryption that not everyone has implemented. So if you’re only messaging within Android, encryption works. However, when the recipient switches to an iPhone, for example, the end devices cannot agree and encryption is not active.

The cure is MLS (Messaging Layer Security) technology. It is a new standard for message encryption that also works across different platforms. As discovered by specialists from Android Authority, in the latest beta version of the Messages app (v20250106) there is switchwhich allows MLS to activate.

So far it only works for messages between individuals. Pro group chats failed to activate MLS. But it’s just a beta, so we’ll have to wait a little longer for the final result.

Google Messages

Besides getting stronger safetyit can be seen that Google is trying to RCS enforce really everywhere where it’s even a little bit possible.

Are you using RCS?
