Washing a quilt in a washing machine is a task that seems complicated to many people, but with proper preparation it can be done safely and efficiently. It is extremely important to choose the right programme, detergent and drying technique to avoid damaging the filling or the appliance itself. Today we explain how to care for your duvet to ensure cleanliness and comfort in use.
Why is washing the duvet important?
Regular washing of the duvet plays an essential role in maintaining the hygiene of the bedroom and in protecting the health of those who use it.
The filling of a duvet, regardless of its type, accumulates sweat, dust and exfoliated skin over time, which provides an excellent breeding ground for bacteria, fungi and mites. These microorganisms can cause allergic reactions such as itching, coughing, runny nose or skin irritation.
People with asthma or allergies are particularly vulnerable, as contact with allergens can cause more serious respiratory problems. Frequent washing is necessary, especially in the case of people with increased sweating, where the accumulated moisture favors the multiplication of microorganisms.
Taking care of cleanliness also affects the general aesthetics of the bedroom and comfort during sleep. A dirty duvet, even under the bedclothes, can give off an unpleasant smell and look neglected. Stains caused by sweat or other dirt become embedded in the fabric structure over time, making them difficult to remove, even with specialized products. The frequency of washing a duvet cover should be adapted to its type and use. Synthetic products, which dry easily and are more resistant to moisture, can be washed even every 3-6 months. Models with natural fillings, such as down or wool, require a more careful approach and usually need to be refreshed only once every one or two years.
It is also worth remembering that stains caused by drinks and food require an immediate reaction to avoid them becoming permanently embedded in the material and damaging the fabric structure. Ignoring these stains can make them impossible to remove, and the grease and sugar will become a breeding ground for fungus and bacteria. In addition to washing, it is equally important to air the duvet constantly, especially on cold and dry days. Its exposure to fresh air helps to eliminate humidity, restores freshness and limits the growth of mites, maintaining long-term hygiene.
Washing a quilt in the washing machine – what you need to know?
The first step before washing a comforter is to carefully check the label for the manufacturer’s recommendations. The information on the label specifies whether a particular model is machine washable and, if so, what temperature and program are appropriate to avoid damage.
Fillings such as down, feathers or wool usually require gentler settings, while synthetic materials are more resistant to higher temperatures.
It is equally important to pay attention to the capacity of your car. to wash – a duvet that is too big can not only wash unevenly, but can also overload the drum, which can lead to equipment failure.
Choosing the right detergents is equally important to preserve the structure of the filling and avoid sticking. It is advisable to use mild detergents, preferably hypoallergenic liquids and powders, without bleaches or harsh enzymes that can damage fibers or leave residues that are difficult to rinse.
Covers with natural inserts, such as down or wool, require special liquids that help maintain the elasticity of the fabric. Too much detergent can make rinsing even more difficult.
So it’s always worth using half the amount of detergent you would use for normal laundry. How to wash a large duvet in the washing machine?
Preparing a large quilt for machine washing begins with careful folding to distribute the weight evenly and prevent the fabric from shifting during the cycle.
The easiest way is to lay it on a flat surface and then fold it in half. If the size of the quilt is still difficult, you can repeat the folding again or use an end-to-center fan folding technique.
The safest solution is to select a mode designed for delicate fabrics, which ensures gentle drum movements and minimizes the risk of damage to the fabric or stitching.
More and more modern washing machines also offer special programs designed for washing duvets and pillows, which automatically adjust parameters such as cycle time, spin intensity and amount of water.
The standard temperature should be between 30-40 degrees Celsius, which is safe for both synthetic and natural fillers.
