Doctor Nikiforov denied rumors of a 43% mortality rate from metapneumovirus
Vladimir Nikiforov, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine of Pirogov University, commented on the situation with metapneumovirus in China.
According to him, this is not a new virus. “It is well known; it was described in detail back in 2001 in Holland. Like any other virus, it periodically rises,” the doctor reassured the Russians.
The professor also estimated information about its mortality rate at 43%. The expert claims that this information is not true. In fact, the mortality rate from metapneumovirus is low, the doctor assured in an interview with “Gazeta.ru”.
Nikiforov explained that China would have declared a quarantine on the metapneumovirus if the mortality rate had been at 43%. The specialist also recalled that modern plague has a mortality rate of 7%, and coronavirus – 2–3%. In addition, he said that the diagnosis of “metapneumovirus” can only be made in a laboratory.
Previously, Dr. Alexander Myasnikov assessed the risks of a new epidemic due to metapneumovirus.
