In the AV industry, information technicians are often found developing media controls. The large controls from manufacturers such as AMX or Crestron still work on the basis of a programming language and require appropriate knowledge in order to implement more complex control environments.

In addition, user interfaces on control elements such as touch panels or mobile views also need to be programmed in some systems. Since AV systems are now becoming increasingly networked, complex network architectures are sometimes required to integrate them. Information technicians are responsible for setting up such networks, maintaining them and configuring them as well as the individual end points such as audio, video or control systems. In order to keep others up to date on current system developments, changes must always be recorded in software documentation. The information technician also advises on planning, supports project management, speaks with customers and takes care of commissioning and on-site service. Instructing and training users is also part of the task.
Information technicians with a technical focus are often tasked with installing application software, repairing, maintaining and supporting the systems and systems they support. But this can also include analyzing errors and repairing devices and systems.
Information engineers in software development are responsible for many different areas in the AV industry. Here you will find areas of responsibility such as the design and development of simulation software and the development of software products to complement existing hardware components or solutions. Extensive testing of the developed software solutions is part of programming.
Requirements
Training as a computer scientist, electronics engineer, system technician or even multimedia electronics engineer is required, but depending on the working environment, a degree in electrical engineering, communications engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or similar is also necessary. Companies are happy to see that they already have a certain amount of experience in the area of media or industrial controls as well as object-oriented programming; appropriate certificates are desirable. Experience with network infrastructures and especially digital AV networks is also an advantage. You shouldn’t be unfamiliar with dealing with common server solutions and Linux environments. A curious interest in new technologies and a good comprehension are not wrong in the AV industry. Since information technicians are often in contact with customers, a well-groomed appearance and a certain amount of experience in dealing with customers are advantageous. Good knowledge of spoken and written German and English is expected, as working with international companies is not unusual.
In the area of software development, knowledge in the areas of data transmission, networking and measurement technology is welcome. You should have experience with common programming languages such as C++ and Java, as well as an interest in audio, video or control technology.
According to karista.de, the average salary of an information technician is between €41,000 and €48,000 gross per year. Higher salaries are possible with specialization.
