In an interview with the Delfi news portal, Boris Johnson did not hold back when asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s alleged imperial ambitions.
The former British Prime Minister, who was also the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, this time also firmly stood by Kiev.
During the interview, Johnson reflected on the end of Britain’s former imperial status, drawing parallels with the current situation in Russia. He emphasized that Putin must understand: Moscow is no longer an imperial power either.
You must understand that Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania…these countries are no longer part of the Russian Empire
Johnson said. He added: Neither is Ukraine.
Not long after, he directed his words to the Russian president, calling Vladimir Putin an idiot.
Johnson has previously been known for his vocal support for Ukraine. During his prime ministership, the United Kingdom provided significant military and humanitarian aid to the country fighting Russian aggression, At the end of 2024, the Russian president also blamed him, among other things, for the failed peace agreement at the beginning of 2022.
