Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sibiga, today classified Nicolás Maduro’s inauguration in Venezuela as a “farce” and said that the Venezuelan people were “robbed” of the decision taken in the elections. “Ukraine aligns itself with the EU’s position. Nicolas Maduro’s so-called ‘investiture’ was a farce,” he wrote on his X account, cited by the Efe agency. “The Venezuelan people were robbed of their decision. We will continue to support the people of Venezuela and insist that their rights and civil liberties must be respected,” he concluded.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro took office on Friday for a third term, despite the opposition claiming victory in July’s presidential elections and after protests in the South American country and abroad against the repression carried out by his government. Maduro took the oath of office before the National Assembly (parliament) controlled by the ruling party, one day after the main leader of the Venezuelan opposition, María Corina Machado, announced that she had been briefly detained by state security forces, an accusation denied by the Government.
The European Union (EU) stated that Nicolás Maduro does not have “the legitimacy” of a “democratically elected” president. “The Venezuelan authorities missed a fundamental opportunity to respect the will of the people and ensure a transparent democratic transition with guarantees for everyone. Nicolás Maduro therefore does not have the legitimacy of a democratically elected president,” said the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, in a statement on behalf of the EU-27.
