Air Serbia broke the record, flew to Shanghai and expects a fourth wide-body aircraft

Air Serbia General Director Jirži Marek said that the national airline has high expectations for the new direct route it has introduced to Shanghai, as well as that it expects the fourth wide-body plane for long-haul destinations to arrive in January.

“This is a historic moment, this is the fourth long-haul destination we are currently flying to. After New York, Chicago and Guangzhou, we have now established a line for one of the most sought-after and least covered long-haul destinations from Serbia,” Marek told Tanjug.

Asked to comment on the company’s results from last year, Marek stated that with 4.44 million passengers, the best result was achieved in the nearly 98-year history of the national airline.

“We will try to improve this result further this year and to transfer the record from last year,” said Marek.

He stated that he expects that Air Serbia’s fourth wide-body aircraft for long-haul destinations will arrive in January, as well as that the aircraft will also be in the EXPO livery.

When asked what the company’s plans are for the next period, Marek said that the company will focus even more on its current destinations in China – Guangzhou and Shanghai, and that they are working on getting permission for a direct flight to Beijing.

When it comes to North America, he stated that the company has announced on several occasions so far that it is considering opening direct flights to Miami and Toronto, but that at the moment it cannot confirm when that will be.

New records

In 2024, Air Serbia transported 4.44 million passengers in regular and charter traffic, which is six percent more than the record year 2023.

That company announced that it made 47,022 flights from its home airport in Belgrade and the other two international airports in Serbia – Nis and Kraljevo, four percent more compared to the previous year.

Air Serbia also transported more than 7,144 tons of cargo, which is 25.14 percent more than in 2023 and its best result since operating under its current name.
