Saudi Arabia Holding has unveiled plans to build the tallest skyscraper in the world, called Rise Tower, in Riyadh and to be built as part of a futuristic project called the North Pole.

The exact height of the Rise Tower has not yet been announced, but it will have to be taller than 828 meters to surpass the Burj Khalifa. It is said that the Saudis would like to build an extreme skyscraper with a height of up to two kilometers.

The financing of the two-kilometer skyscraper is being considered by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF). A site near King Khalid International Airport has already been earmarked for this project and EY has drawn up a feasibility study.

Contractors in the region estimate that building such a tall tower could cost around $5 billion. However, the potential benefits could be outweighed, as evidenced by the construction of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which has brought enormous economic development and profits to the city.

An architectural competition with an entry fee of 1 million US dollars has already been initiated. Top developers, architects, construction specialists and project managers were invited, including well-known firms such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture.

The “North Pole” project itself is to be spread over an area of over 300 square kilometers and is to be a hi-tech extension of Riyadh. In addition to the Rise Tower itself, autonomous transport, underground high-speed rail, flying taxis and intelligent infrastructure are expected. At the same time, the project emphasizes sustainability by incorporating green areas and using renewable resources. Currently, the project is in the phase of detailed planning, construction should start this decade.
