Moscow has given in: they are willing to fulfill one of Ukraine’s most important requests

Lavrov said that “in a Eurasian context” Russia is ready to provide security guarantees “to the country currently called Ukraine”.

He explained: the “Eurasian context” means that, in his opinion, the West wants to push Russia out of its own sphere of interest, and they are trying to use Ukraine for this purpose. taking into account Russian interests, they are willing to give security guarantees to Ukraine.

The “security guarantee” means that Russia would not attack Ukraine again.

He also pointed out that these guarantees would not apply to “the country now called Ukraine” as a whole, since “Crimea and Novorossiysk” were annexed by Russia.

For a long time, Ukraine’s leadership considered only NATO membership as a viable “security guarantee”, learning from the failure of the 1994 Budapest Convention. However, after the election of Donald Trump, they also gave up on this demand, similar to the territorial unit. Currently, the Ukrainian leadership is talking about the fact that they are willing to even “temporarily” give up territories, if in return the West gives them viable security guarantees against the Russian threat.
