Nottingham Forest and Liverpool play 1-1 in a direct duel between numbers 1 and 2 in the Premier League. The draw means that Liverpool maintain their lead of six points down to the big positive surprise of the season – albeit with a game in hand.
Liverpool must therefore admit that the team will not record a victory over Nottingham Forest this season, as it turned into a 0-1 defeat in the reverse fixture at Anfield earlier in the season.
A header from a corner was needed before Liverpool scored against Nottingham Forest after three goalless halves this season. Diogo Jota came off the bench on Tuesday and got the leading team 1-1 away from home against their current nearest rival in the Premier League.
Liverpool have 47 points from 20 games, while Nottingham follow with 41 points from 21 games. Arsenal can go past and take second place from the sensational team on Wednesday.
Nottingham demonstrated before the break why the team is at the top and showed up with six league wins in a row. After a promising start with several tries for the away team, the home team struck like a rattlesnake after eight minutes. A couple of duels were won in the central midfield, and the ball ended up with the Swedish winger Anthony Elanga, who with a well-tempered deep ball found top scorer Chris Wood. And the 33-year-old New Zealander sent Nottingham 1-0 with an extreme and measured finish with his left foot.
Liverpool subsequently had a lot of play, but the hosts were good at closing down the most dangerous spaces, and therefore Liverpool’s attempts were often from distance or other less favorable positions.
The match picture continued to some extent after the break, but Liverpool gradually got heavier and heavier on the game, and therefore it was quite fair when midway through the second half it was 1-1 via two substitutes. Right after his jump-in, the Greek full-back Kostas Tsimikas thus threw a corner kick into the box, which also replaced Diogo Jota headed into the net.
Nottingham were still fairly resistant, but seemed increasingly drained of strength, and twice keeper Matz Sels had to come up with good saves to prevent Jota from becoming a double goalscorer. The Belgian saved another couple of attempts in the final phase and thus became the savior for Nottingham.
Nørgaard earns points against City
Brentford took great pride in the match and got a point for their efforts when the Danish club met Manchester City at home. Captain Christian Nørgaard made sure of that with a nice header to make it 2-2 in overtime. City had taken a 2-0 lead in the second half thanks to two goals by Phil Foden, but Yoane Wissa and thus Nørgaard turned the game on its head.
After three straight wins in all competitions after a disastrous few months, the result was another dip for Pep Guardiola’s side, who remain outside the top four in the table. The central team Brentford, who started with four Danes, showed to a great extent that City are far from being in the same invulnerable form as before.
City took the lead when the team had De Bruyne set up on the right side, and without pressure the creator threw a razor-sharp cross into the box, which Foden almost felt behind keeper Mark Flekken. Brentford did well in the following period and front runner Yoane Wissa in particular should have equalized but had his finish blocked.
Instead, it was 0-2 after 78 minutes, when Brentford’s fourth Danish player, Mads Roerslev, lost a duel to Savinho, who forced a return ball from Flekken, which Foden converted for his second strike.
A small handful of minutes later, Roerslev got his revenge with a good assist for Wissa’s reduction goal from close range, and it was important for the London team. That allowed for a final push, and in it Nørgaard rose to the air after Brentford had held on to the ball well, and poked Lewis-Potter’s cross into the crossbar.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, sub-top side Chelsea only drew 2-2 at home to Bournemouth after a free-kick goal in extra time by substitute captain and oft-injured full-back Reece James. Graham Potter made his Premier League debut as West Ham manager a 3-2 win over Fulham.
