In Latvia, too little attention is paid to the responsible transportation of children and training drivers on these issues, said an expert from the Road Safety Directorate Oskars Irbitis after a tragic accident on the Ventspils highway, writes Lsm.lv.
“Drivers must understand who they are driving. If they are transporting children, then the characteristics of such passengers must be taken into account. Children are active and energetic. Therefore, it is very important that they are fastened. There should be no such negligence towards safety. Even today, on my way to work, I saw a car with a child standing inside,” Irbitis said.
Answering the question of whether child carriers should undergo additional courses or training, the expert noted: “In the current situation, we probably cannot make this mandatory. But any self-government, any enterprise can do this on a voluntary basis. We have defensive driving courses, there are companies that do this.”
After the tragic incident, the Ventspils municipality promises to pay special attention to the issues of transporting children.
Schoolchildren in the municipality are mainly transported by the company “Ventspils reiss”, but the cultural center, whose students were injured in the accident, attracts private carriers, as happened in this case.
As reported, five victims of the tragic accident on the Ventspils highway are still being treated in hospitals, including three children and two adults
