Passat TDI? It’s no longer profitable. With TSI you won’t burn the difference in price

How quickly will you burn 2,600 liters of fuel? The Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI 150 HP consumes on average only 0.56 l/100 km less than the same Passat but with 1.5 eTSI mHEV. This means that the difference in the purchase price of a diesel car compared to an equivalent car with a petrol engine will be recovered only after driving… 450,000. kilometers!

Volkswagen Passat is available with various engines, but the cheapest drive systems for this very spacious and practical car (the latest generation has grown a lot) are the 1.5 TSI mHEV 110 kW (150 HP) petrol engine or the 2.0 TDI SCR diesel engine available in the 122 or 150 HP version. When you compare the purchase price of a Passat in a petrol version (eTSI) with a diesel version (TDI) with the same power of 150 HP, you get a difference of ~ PLN 16,500. zloty. That’s a lot.

2.0 TDI versus 1.5 TSI mHEV – spalanie

It turns out that the Volkswagen Passat 1.5 eTSI mHEV is only slightly more fuel-efficient than a comparably equipped Passat station wagon with a 2.0 TDI SCR diesel engine. By averaging all the tests we conducted, we get a difference of 0.56 l/100 km:

More precisely, 5.1 versus 5.66 l/100 km (average of all fuel consumption measurements). This means that the above-mentioned ~2,600 liters of fuel, which we are able to buy for the difference in the purchase price between TDI and eTSI, will be consumed for… ~450,000. km. How many years do you need to travel such a distance in one car?

In reality, the difference will be even greater due to the need to add AdBlue to the Passat TDI, which is not necessary in the case of the petrol version of this car. And you need to refill the fuel tank every few times.

1.5 TSI mHEV is also faster…

As if that was not enough, the Volkswagen Passat 1.5 TSI mHEV 110 kW accelerates better than the version with 2.0 TDI SCR 110 kW (150 HP). You can read about this and other differences in the use of diesel and gasoline in the latest Passat in an extensive comparison of both versions of this car.
