Just in time for the New Year, Metas Messaging App (WhatsApp) presents brand new chat functions. You can make stickers directly from selfies, share your sticker sets, and use popular camera effects. Reactions to messages are also optimized in a special way.
Selfies have long since become a common cultural practice in the mobile-first age. Billions of self-portraits are taken with smartphones every day – and often sent to friends and family via messenger services such as WhatsApp. To make sharing selfies even more fun in the future, WhatsApp now offers selfie stickers. These allow you to creatively reinterpret the recording and are intended to make chatting more fun.
In addition to this feature, Metas Messaging App delivers new camera effects with 30 backgrounds and multi-faceted animations as well as two other updates for an interactive chat experience. The focus should be on fun and ease of use. The latter is particularly evident in the new Reaction feature.
New possibilities for WhatsApp chats in 2025: visuals, creativity and speed in focus
The core message of WhatsApp, that shared on the official blog as part of the presentation of new features is simple:
We are continually working to make WhatsApp as simple and entertaining as possible (…).
In order to meet this goal, Meta continually offers app users new functions. The four most recent innovations are:
- Camera effects from video calls for the chats
- Selfie Sticker
- Share sticker sets
- Faster reactions to messages
Users will be particularly interested in the camera effects and selfie stickers. Anyone who takes a video or photo to send it in the chat will in future be able to access the same 30 backgrounds, filters and effects that WhatsApp introduced for video calls in autumn 2024.

The selfie sticker option, in turn, allows you to tap on the camera directly in the search field for the stickers, take a selfie and send it directly as a sticker. The feature is now rolling out for Android and later for iOS.
Finally, WhatsApp now allows users to share entire sticker sets that they like or that the other person in the chat might like. And the reactions to messages, which have come with various emojis since 2022 – a new central one is already being tested – will also receive an update. Users can now simply react to a message with a double tap. This action opens the overview of the most frequently used reactions.
Most recently, the messaging app has already given its more than two billion users the opportunity to create groups and communities more easily. In addition, the first users (in the USA) can access ChatGPT via WhatsApp. Access to the Microsoft Copilot via WhatsApp is already possible in Germany.
