Compared to the basic model, only the number of tensor processors will be reduced.

A week ago, we wrote about NVIDIA presenting the new GeForces, including the GeForce RTX 5090, of which China will receive a special version called the GeForce RTX 5090D. The company didn’t really talk about this in more detail, because it doesn’t affect Western markets, but it has now been revealed that the two developments offer basically the same parameters, only the tensor processors will differ.
According to NVIDIA’s specifications, the GeForce RTX 5090 model will be capable of an AI speed of 3352 TOPS, while the 5090D will be capable of 2375 TOPS. The Greens achieve this by specifically disabling tensor processors in individual multiprocessors, so the VGA intended for China has fewer of these components, while at the same time all other processors remain active, meaning that only AI performance is limited.
For the time being, the GeForce RTX 5090D meets the US restrictions with this specification, i.e. it is just slow enough to be sold to China, but as was typical in the past, the US tends to change the limits, and new hardware is banned over time.
