In 2024, bulk cargo was handled the most in Latvian ports – 17.117 million tons, which is 18.7% less than the year before.
Among them, grain and grain products were handled in the amount of 6.929 million tons, which is 2.8% less than in 2023, wood chips were handled in the amount of 2.567 million tons, which is 32.9% more, coal was handled in the amount of 1.049 million tons, which is 3.5 times less, but 502 were handled chemical bulk cargoes 800 tons, which is 19.4% less than a year earlier.
In 2024, general cargo was handled in Latvian ports in the amount of 13.639 million tons, which is 4.4% more than in 2023.
Among them, timber was handled in the amount of 5.214 million tons, which is 30.3% more than a year earlier, 5.063 million tons in cargo containers, which is 1.2% less, while “roll on/roll off” or ro-ro cargo – 3.124 million tons, which is 8.2% less.
On the other hand, bulk cargo was handled in the amount of 5.256 million tons last year, which is 16% more than in 2023.
The majority of bulk cargo transshipped was oil products – 4.607 million tons, which is an increase of 13% compared to the previous year.
The port of Riga was still in the leading position in terms of the amount of cargo handled last year, where 18.062 million tons were handled, which is 3.9% less than in 2023.
The port of Ventspils follows, where cargo turnover last year was 8.234 million tons, which is 21% less, while the third place was the port of Liepāja with 7.049 million tons, which is 2.5% less than in 2023.
Among the small Latvian ports, the largest cargo turnover in 2024 was in the port of Skulte – 1.412 million tons, which is 26.1% more than the year before. It is followed by the port of Meersraga with 687,300 tons, which is 23.6% more, and the port of Salacgrivas with 517,000 tons of cargo, which is 13.2% more than a year ago.
In general, 2.667 million tons of cargo were handled in the small ports of Latvia last year, which is 20.7% more than in 2023.
It has already been announced that a total of 38.655 million tons of cargo were handled in Latvian ports in 2023, which is 19.6% less than in 2022.
