TikTok’s presence in the United States is not yet assured, so users are already testing alternatives. Of the various applications, there is one, also Chinese, that is particularly benefiting from the potential ban.
With the potential ban of TikTok in the United States looming, users of the app are turning to lesser-known ones, pulling them to the top of the Apple and Google stores.
So far, the option that appears to have benefited most from the potential ban is called RedNote or Xiaohongshu. Similar to TikTok, with the ability to vertically swipe through feeds of short videos based on your interests, it ranks first in App Store and 34th place in Play Store.
This app, also Chinese, has been gaining popularity, with many TikTok creators posting their experiences. At the same time, on RedNote, several creators have already shared videos welcoming "TikTok refugees."
Despite its popularity, much of RedNote's interface is in Chinese. Still, there are some useful videos on TikTok, interestingly enough, that explain how to change the application language to English.
According to CNBCeven though it seems to have emerged from the year, the application has been well known in China for several years. In fact, it is seen as a competitor to Douyin from ByteDance and e-commerce giant Alibaba, with around 300 million users.
In addition to RedNote, other applications have grown, driven by the potential ban on TikTok in the United States, namely:
- A Lemon8another ByteDance application;
- A Flip“where social meets shopping”;
- A ReelShort seems to want to be a streaming platform;
While it's unlikely that any of these alternatives will explode in popularity, following in TikTok's footsteps, the fact that so many relatively unknown apps have risen to the top of the app stores so quickly highlights the influence that TikTok users and creators can have and highlights the fact that the TikTok ban alone cannot stop the influence of Chinese technology companies in the United States.
