On Wednesday, rescue workers in South Africa brought up even more dead and survivors from an illegal gold mine, which the police have effectively besieged since August.
On Tuesday, a total of 38 bodies had been retrieved from the mine in a rescue effort that began on Monday.
On Wednesday, the number has risen to 78, while 166 miners have been rescued alive.
Between August and December, the police cut off the possibility of sending food and water down the mine in Stilfontein with the aim of forcing the miners to come up.
However, a court ruled in December that volunteers should be allowed to send food and water down the mine. At the same time, the authorities were ordered to initiate a rescue operation.
Among the workers who have been picked up in recent days, many are emaciated and disoriented. Several hundred are believed to still be down in the mine.
These are primarily illegal immigrants from other African countries. The survivors have been charged with illegal immigration and illegal mining.
