Toyota is ending the BZ label for electric models in Europe

Before Toyota launched the production version of the bZ4X, it introduced a label for future electric models: bZ. The bZ adventure started with the bZ4X Concept, a study model that was ready for the car market a year later as the bZ4X, including the Dutch one. In our corner of the world, the Toyota bZ4X is the only bZ-Toyota and it seems to remain that way. Andrea Carlucci, Director of Marketing and Product Development at Toyota Motor Europe, told the English Autocar that a clear signal was sent from Europe to abandon the bZ label here. “That signal has certainly been received by Japan,” says Carlucci. That immediately explains why the brand new compact electric crossover from Toyota is called ‘Urban Cruiser’ and not ‘bZ2X’. According to Carlucci, Toyota tried to make its EV range clear with the bZ label. For the bZ models, the number represents the positioning in the range. The X addition indicates that it is a crossover or SUV-like vehicle. Wait a minute, bZ models? Are there more than the bZ4X? Certainly. But not in the Netherlands. Since 2023, Toyota has been selling the bZ3, a Corolla-sized electric sedan, in China. Since last year, Chinese consumers have also been able to order this bZ3C and this bZ3X. We expect the bZ3C to also come to Europe with a different model name – and with a handful of technical changes.
