Siri and our long-standing commitment to privacy

Apple is actively committed to protecting your data, and its products and features are built from the ground up using innovative technologies and data security mechanisms. Privacy protection is a fundamental part of the design process, subject to the principles of data minimization, transparency and control, and is based on intelligent algorithms and strong data security built into the device. All this together gives users not only an amazing experience, but also a sense of security. These principles and mechanisms apply to all Apple products and services, including Siri, the most personal digital assistant designed to protect user privacy.

Apple has never used data collected using Siri to create marketing profiles, has never shared such data for advertising purposes, and has never offered such data for sale to any entity for any purpose. Moreover, we are constantly improving technologies that make Siri more personal and we intend to continue to do so in the future.

Siri protects user data using the following policies and mechanisms.

Where possible, Siri uses on-device processing

To protect data privacy, Siri uses on-device processing to the greatest extent possible and provides personalized interactions without having to transmit personal data to Apple and analyze it on Apple servers. Questions you ask or type for Siri are processed locally in all possible situations. For example, when a user asks Siri to read unread messages, or when Siri makes suggestions in widgets or during searches, the processing takes place on the user’s device. The content of the message is not transferred to Apple’s servers, as this is not required to fulfill such requests. However, audio recordings of user questions are processed only locally on compatible devices using the Neural Engine, unless the user has consented to transmit them to Apple.

Apple minimizes the amount of data collected from Siri questions

Apple strives to fulfill requests as fully as possible on your device, but some features require real-time data from Apple’s servers. In such cases, Siri limits the data to only those that can provide accurate results. Searches and queries performed by Siri are not associated with a user’s Apple account. To track processed data, a random identifier associated with a specific device is used in the form of a long alphanumeric string, which replaces the mechanism of associating the user’s identity with an Apple account or phone number. To our knowledge, this approach is not used in any other digital assistant currently available.

Unless you expressly consent to your participation in improving Siri, Apple will not retain audio recordings of your Siri queries, and even if you do so, the audio recordings will only be used for that purpose. You may withdraw your consent at any time. Breakthrough privacy protection with private cloud computing The power of Apple Intelligence brings Siri into a new era of innovation, giving users more ways to act conveniently with built-in intelligence. In this way, Siri becomes even more versatile, personal and helpful with current tasks.

The Apple Intelligence system was created to constantly protect user privacy, which is why many of the models on which this system is based operate only locally. For queries requiring access to larger models, private cloud computing extends the privacy and security of Apple devices to the cloud to unleash even more powerful artificial intelligence resources. However, when Siri uses a private cloud, the data is not saved on the server or shared with Apple, and the private cloud only uses users’ data to fulfill their commands.

We believe that privacy is a fundamental human right. We will continue to maintain an uncompromising focus on creating products and services that protect this right.
