Mercedes-Benz and Google launch navigation with advanced AI

Mercedes-Benz and Google Cloud have joined forces to integrate advanced conversational capabilities into the MBUX Virtual Assistant, improving navigation and searching for points of interest.

Mercedes-Benz y Google Cloud announced the expansion of their strategic partnership to introduce new conversational capabilities powered by artificial intelligence in the MBUX virtual assistant. Using the advanced technology of Google Cloud Automotive AI Agent, built on Gemini models in Vertex AI, the German brand’s vehicles will offer a more personalized and fluid navigation experience.

A technological leap in navigation and search

At the core of this collaboration is the implementation of Google Cloud’s generative artificial intelligence, which will power the MBUX virtual assistant with advanced search and navigation functions. Thanks to Google Maps Platform, users will have access to up-to-date information on 250 million places around the world, with real-time updates that include more than 100 million daily changes.

Among the most notable new features is the ability to maintain complex conversational dialogues. Drivers will be able to ask questions like: β€œCan you take me to a fine dining restaurant nearby?” and receive detailed responses, including ratings, user reviews and even menu details, such as the chef’s signature dish.

This initial experience will debut in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA, the first model equipped with the next-generation MB.OS operating system. It is expected that this functionality will progressively extend to other vehicles of the brand.

Natural dialogues and conversational memory

One of the most revolutionary features of the system is its ability to handle natural, multi-turn dialogues, that is, conversations in which the assistant remembers previous contexts. For example, after receiving directions to a restaurant, users can ask, “Is there parking available nearby?” or “What are the opening hours?” without needing to restart the theme.

This seamless interaction not only improves the user experience, but marks a significant advance in the integration of virtual assistants with technology based on extensive language models (LLMs).

Technology behind innovation

The Google Cloud Automotive AI Agent uses Gemini models, which stand out for their capacity for multimodal reasoning through natural language interactions. These tools allow data from Google Maps Platform to be seamlessly integrated with the vehicle’s native interface, providing fast and detailed responses in real time.

The platform not only improves interaction with the voice assistant, but also allows automakers to customize their own assistants using cutting-edge technologies.

Impact on the automotive industry

This announcement marks a significant step on the path towards digitalization and personalization of the automotive experience. The combination of generative artificial intelligence and advanced navigation systems redefines consumer expectations about in-vehicle interaction.

The launch of the AI-enhanced MBUX Virtual Assistant is just the beginning of a new era in which virtual assistants not only provide directions, but enrich the driver experience with natural and personalized interactions. Led by the new Mercedes-Benz CLA, this technology promises to redefine how users relate to their vehicles, opening up a range of possibilities for the future of smart mobility.
