RNIDS presents another new Cyrillic script on the occasion of the 13th birthday of the .srb domain

For 13 years, .srb domain names have been available for registration, and for the sixth year, the Foundation “Registry of the National Internet Domain of Serbia” (RNIDS) on the occasion of the birthday of the .srb domain, presents Internet users with new Serbian Cyrillic fonts intended primarily for screen display.

Manument RNIDS letter, created in cooperation with the organization tipometerwill be presented on January 27 at 10 a.m. in the “Svetozar Marković” University Library.

For the last few years, RNIDS has been marking this important date by giving away Cyrillic fonts intended for screen display, digital formats, and print. So far, five letters have been given away – Areal RNIDS, Ortho RNIDS, Lingva RNIDS, Etar RNIDS and Neo Geo RNIDS, which users can download at the following link.

The new typeface Manument RNIDS is inspired by classic grotesque sanserifs, with elements of humanist sanserifs, created to provide visibility and legibility on screen, as good as in print. It is a rich family of fonts – as many as 14 weights, which will be available for free download on the RNIDS website and imanacirilici.srb. The author of the letter is Lazar Rakonjac, a graphic designer from Belgrade, who, after completing his basic studies at the Faculty of Applied Arts, Department of Graphics and Books, continued his education at the master’s program of the same faculty, with a focus on the design of typographic letters.

During the event on January 27, in addition to the presentation of the new typeface, a lecture on “Language models in the service of the digital identity of Serbian cultural heritage” will be held. Lecturer Vasilije Milnović, head of the Science Center of the “Svetozar Marković” University Library, will talk about the possibility of training artificial intelligence on high-quality language corpora of the Serbian literary language, and will point to international and domestic projects in this area.

The website will also be presented during the event imanacirilici.srbinitially developed during the hackathon held at the end of 2022. Over the past year, one of the winning teams has continued to develop and deliver a website that is intended to be a community platform to share knowledge, resources, ideas and examples of using Cyrillic on the Internet.

At the end of the event, Dušan Stojičević, deputy president of the RNIDS Board of Directors, will be the interlocutor of Dijana Milutinović, RNIDS, and the subject of the conversation will be the position of internationalized domain names (IDNs), such as our .srb, on the world stage, the issue of universal acceptability and IDNs in in light of the development of modern technologies, primarily artificial intelligence.

Registration of the .srb domain began on January 27, 2012. To date, almost all countries that use the Cyrillic alphabet have made it possible to register domain names in Cyrillic as well, and .srb is the second Cyrillic national Internet top-level domain (ccTLD) in the world.
