After the tumultuous debate about the US’s interest in Greenland and the intensified interest in independence, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) has now spoken to the future US president, Donald Trump.
It happened in a 45-minute phone call on Wednesday 15 January.
This is stated by the Prime Minister’s Office in a press release.
The conversation has, among other things, revolved around security in the Arctic.
“During the conversation, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening security in the Arctic, and that the Kingdom of Denmark is ready to shoulder an even greater responsibility for this,” the Prime Minister’s Office states in the press release.
Likewise, the question of the ownership of Greenland has been touched upon, where Mette Frederiksen, according to the Prime Minister’s Office, has emphasized the Greenlanders’ own influence.
“In the conversation, the Prime Minister has referred to the chairman of Naalakkersuisut Múte B. Egede’s statements that Greenland is not for sale, and the Prime Minister has claimed that it is up to Greenland itself to make a decision about independence,” it continues.
The call comes after Donald Trump has again expressed his desire to secure American ownership of Greenland.
He wants to make the country ‘great again’ – a pun on his slogan of making America great again.
Furthermore, at a press conference, Donald Trump has refused to deny that he will use military or economic coercion to achieve his wish.
The case prompted the government to call all party leaders to a meeting last week, where they were briefed on the government’s diplomatic efforts behind closed doors.
In this connection, Mette Frederiksen said that the Danish side had reached out to the Trump camp to have a conversation.
The prime minister did not expect to hear back from Donald Trump before his inauguration as president on January 20.
The call was thus answered faster than expected.
In the telephone conversation, Mette Frederiksen also spoke to Donald Trump about ‘Danish companies contributing to growth and jobs in the US, and that the EU and the US have a common interest in strengthened trade.’
Furthermore, the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and the relationship with China have also been discussed, it says.
The Prime Minister emphasizes that the Prime Minister and the incoming President have agreed to continue the dialogue.
