Swiss electric skis E-Skimo are intended for ski alpinists.
E-skimo skis with electric support, called E-Skimo, generated considerable interest when they were presented at the CES trade fair. Detailed details and technical information have already appeared on the website of the Swiss manufacturer. The latest form of skis significantly simplifies the ascent to the slope and improves their control.
Each ski in the lineup is equipped with a removable gearless hub motor with a torque of 20 Nm, a lithium battery with a capacity of 220 Wh and a split rubber tread (similar to a snowmobile) that is threaded over the ski. Each of the motor units is equipped with a 6-axis measuring unit (IMU) sensing movement and a GPS module. In a cold environment, the electric motor is protected by a special cover that resists low temperatures and humidity.
At a medium level of support, the battery can power the skis for approximately three to five hours, while at a lower level of assistance, the endurance can be even longer. A simple clamping system allows it to be quickly replaced directly on the slope. The manufacturer declares charging to approximately 80% capacity within one to one and a half hours. Thanks to built-in sensors such as gyroscope and accelerometer, the system can adapt to changes in the terrain and ensure an optimal shot in real time. So you do not regulate the amount of electric assistance yourself, but it is determined based on data from sensors. However, we assume that in the production version its “dosing” will be possible. When going downhill, you can easily disconnect the electric assistance system.
The skis have a carbon-kevlar base, the surface layer is made of composite laminate. The first pieces could appear on the market before the start of the next ski season, the price is not yet known.
