With the TikTok ban upon us, more and more Americans are looking for another platform for consuming content. RedNote tops the popularity list in both the Apple App Store for iPhone and the Google Play Store for Android. Although Dutch people do not have to deal with the Tiktok ban, they seem to embrace the alternative to the platform, just like users from the United States.
RedNote is a Chinese app with 300 million active users per day and has been around since 2013. What is striking about the platform is that it not only shows video content like TikTok does, but also has photo content, a messaging service and an online store.
TikTok banned in the United States
Earlier this week we explained in detail what is going on in the United States and were introduced to RedNote. The bottom line is that TikTok owner ByteDance is distrusted by the US government due to its close ties to the Chinese government. The platform would ensure that the usage data of American citizens could easily fall into the hands of the Chinese government.
In April last year it became clear that TikTok had to find a new owner before January 19, 2025. One that doesn’t come from China. If the platform did not achieve this, the popular app would be banned in the United States. TikTok has not yet found that owner and will theoretically go black next Sunday.
RedNote finds its way to the Netherlands
Dutch TikTok users will not be affected by the ban, but the platform will change significantly. Followers of American content creators in particular will no longer be provided with new videos. Given the amount of content from makers from other countries, this should not be a problem in principle, but users seem to be looking for a way out.
Just like the Americans, the Dutch now seem to find this in RedNote. The Chinese application has been downloaded so much in recent days that it dominates all lists. Time will tell whether iPhone and Android users will actually use it or just take a look.
