The mayors representing the municipalities during the tender settlements between October 2018 and October 2020 caused a financial loss of HUF 8.5 million and HUF 2.7 million per settlement to the Hungarian and EU budgets. The damage was fully compensated during the procedure, after an irregularity procedure was initiated in the case.
If the defendants admit their guilt and waive their right to a trial, in that case the prosecution proposed a prison sentence of one year and two months – suspended for two and a half years – on the former mayor of Mindszent, Károly Zsótér (Fidesz–KDNP). József Borsos (independent), the former mayor of Mártély, and Anita Putz (independent), who replaced him in the management of the village, would be put on probation for a year and a half. The prosecution proposed a prison sentence of one and a half years, suspended for three years, against the company manager, and requested that the man be banned from managing the company for three years.
Károly Zsótér denied his guilt. He emphasized that all the events planned during the tender were realized and many people participated in them. They submitted the accounts knowing that everything was done according to the rules. He explained that he did not know that there was a conflict of interest with the project manager who was conducting the tender – and who was therefore receiving special remuneration – since he is also the owner and manager of the company organizing the events. As he said, he himself supported the decision of the representative body to file a complaint in the case.
