Nubia Flip 2: Update for the cheapest folding phone

Entry-level foldable?

ZTE presents the Nubia Flip 2, the successor to its affordable foldable smartphone. How does it compare?

With the Nubia Flip 2, the Chinese manufacturer ZTE is bringing a foldable smartphone onto the market that is probably unparalleled in terms of price. For the equivalent of around 399 euros, the device offers a 120 Hz OLED display, a 50 megapixel main camera and a larger second display that should enable more functionality.

It has a 3-inch rectangular external display with a resolution of 682 x 422 pixels. This replaces the round 1.43-inch panel of the predecessor. Selected apps can be used via the new second display without having to open the smartphone. For the main display, ZTE is once again using a foldable OLED panel with a diagonal of 6.9 inches, 120 Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 2,790 x 1,188 pixels.

The housing is 7.5 millimeters thin and weighs 191 grams. It has an IP42 certification, which means it is only protected against light splashes of water. The fingerprint sensor is located in the side lock button. The camera configuration remains unchanged compared to its predecessor: a 50-megapixel main camera, a 2-megapixel sensor and a 16-megapixel front camera make up the equipment. According to the manufacturer, the 4,300 mAh battery can be fully charged via USB-C in 55 minutes.

Inside, ZTE swaps the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 for the MediaTek Dimensity 7300X. Although it uses older CPU cores, it achieves a similar performance in benchmarks as the previous chip. The memory configuration includes 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. Android 14 is pre-installed as the operating system, supplemented by an NFC chip for contactless payment.

At first this will be Nubia Flip 2 launched in Japan, where it will be available at a price of 64,080 yen (about 399 euros). It is still unclear whether the device will also come to the European market. The predecessor Nubia Flip 5G came onto the market in Germany in spring 2024 with an RRP of 599 euros.
