A new adapted classic
In 2023, Pathé Films has taken the gamble of resurrecting the swashbuckling film by producing and distributing a new adaptation of the novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. Despite some deserved criticism, particularly concerning the action scenes shot in sequence – which harms their visibility – the two films in the diptych bring together six million spectators in French cinemas between them and manage to convince some of criticism. In 2024, Pathé Films enjoys even more resounding success with the adaptation of Comte de Monte Cristoanother great masterpiece by Alexandre Dumas, with Pierre Niney in the lead role. The film managed to attract more than nine million people to French cinemas, and enjoyed success abroad.

Judging by the official synopsis revealed by Warner Bros. France on its page it seems that the film will adapt the first part of Victor Hugo’s novel, focusing on the impact on Jean Valjean of his meeting with Monseigneur Bienvenuabout which Hugo wrote that he “was lenient for women and the poor on whom the weight of human society weighs“.
In any case, this is what the low budget allocated to the film seems to confirm: barely 7 million euros. Currently filming, the feature film is officially scheduled for release this year. Obviously, Les Miserables will not be as ambitious as Le Comte de Monte Cristowhich benefited from a budget of 42 million eurosbut the film could nevertheless attract spectators curious to rediscover one of the greatest masterpieces of French literature.
