Elon Musk’s company said the spacecraft’s six engines appeared to shut down one by one and contact was lost just 8 minutes and 30 seconds after liftoff.
“We’ve lost all communications with the ship – that basically tells us we’ve had an anomaly on the upper deck,” said Dan Huot, SpaceX’s communications manager, confirming minutes later that the ship had been lost.
The spacecraft was supposed to cross the Gulf of Mexico in Texas in a loop around the world, similar to previous test flights. SpaceX had equipped it with 10 dummy satellites to practice launching them. This was the first flight of the new and upgraded spacecraft.
The incident caused widespread disruption to air traffic. At Miami International Airport, some flights were grounded, according to Reuters. Dozens of commercial flights diverted to other airports or changed their route to avoid possible debris, according to records on the website FlightRadar24.
